Our Agenda
The party mission is to build a modern democratic society through promoting social justice for all Kenyans.
Who We Are
Learn more about who we are, what we believe, and what drives us
The United Democratic Movement was formed in 1999 by a reformist wing of young leaders who had broken with the KANU establishment. Denied registration, it fought all the way to the High Court — and won the right to exist in 2001.
Re-launched in 2021 under Capt. Ali Ibrahim Roba, UDM became the political home of Kenya’s long-marginalised northern counties and broke through in the 2022 general election. Today it stands in national government as part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“Ustawi kwa wote” — prosperity for all.
The party mission is to build a modern democratic society through promoting social justice for all Kenyans.
Champion interests of areas still reeling from effects of marginalization and underinvestment and neglect.
Under Frontier Counties Development Council we have seen benefits of lobbying together and have successfully negotiated for huge infrastructure investments.
Red caps, long walks and packed grounds across the frontier — this is what the movement looks like.
A prosperous, united and democratic Kenya where every citizen — in every county — has an equal opportunity to thrive.
To build a modern democratic society through promoting social justice for all Kenyans, and to champion the regions left behind.
Integrity, transparency, inclusivity and an unwavering commitment to the welfare and dignity of every Kenyan.
Six commitments that shape every policy we write and every seat we hold.
Free, fair and credible elections, and the peaceful transfer of power as the only legitimate route to leadership.
A deepened devolution and the equitable sharing of national resources so that development reaches every county.
Zero tolerance for corruption at every level of government, and public resources accounted for to the last shilling.
Young people and women empowered as the real engine of the economy and the pillars of national development.
Peaceful coexistence and dignity for every community — one Kenya where no region is left behind.
Environmental conservation and sustainable development to protect the land and water for generations to come.
Ustawi kwa wote
Our anthem carries the spirit of the movement — unity, dignity and prosperity for every Kenyan. Listen, learn it, and sing it with pride at every gathering as we build the Kenya we all deserve.
From Azimio to Kenya Kwanza, UDM has sat at the table with Kenya’s biggest political figures — and delivered.
UDM joined President Ruto's Kenya Kwanza after the 2022 election. At the Karen signing he welcomed the party "home" he had been among its founders in 1999, before the fallout with KANU.
2022 – present
On 10 March 2022, UDM endorsed the late Raila Odinga as its presidential candidate under the Azimio la Umoja coalition. Following the August 2022 elections, the party parted ways with the coalition over unresolved issues. Raila Odinga passed away on 15 October 2025, leaving behind a significant legacy in Kenya’s political history.
